Usnavi de la Vega is a first-generation Dominican-American and the owner of a small mom & pop shop in Washington Heights that he runs with his cousin Sonny. His parents died when he was younger and he was practically raised by Abuela Claudia. He dreams of one day returning to the Dominican Republic. Usnavi was born in the Dominican Republic, until he and his family immigrated to America, where they settled in New York City. His parents opened a mom & pop shop in the neighborhood of Washington Heights. However, when Usnavi was very young, his parents died. He was then taken in by Abuela Claudia, the neighborhood matriarch, whom raised him as if he was her own. Usnavi remained very close with his cousin Sonny, who lived with his alcoholic father in the neighborhood. He also became well acquainted with the locals in the neighborhood, and they all became like family to Usnavi. Such as Daniela, Carla, and Cuca who ran the local salon. Nina Rosario, and her father Kevin, who ran the local cab company. And his best friend Benny, who worked for as a cab dispatcher. He also became well acquainted with a woman named Vanessa Morales, who worked at Daniela's salon. While the two were friendly with each other, Usnavi grew to have feelings for her, which Benny and Sonny would tease him for. After reaching adulthood, Usnavi took ownership of his family's store, and began running it with Sonny. His dream was to one day move back to his family home in the Dominican Republic with Abuela and Sonny, where he planned on reviving his father's old bar, El Suenito, after it was damaged in a hurricane.

Bryon is big and tall, with dark hair and eyes. He likens himself to looking like a Saint Bernard puppy, something he doesn't mind as it raises his favor with girls. His hair is styled down over his forehead, and he wears it long until he decides to cut it to look mature for job security. Bryon spends his childhood and early teens as a rebellious child getting into various kinds of trouble. Together with Mark they got into fights, stole, and cheated at pool. He was a carefree child and enjoyed living a wild lifestyle. He considers himself a ladies man and likes chatting up women. However, in front of Cathy he tends to be tongue tied. When he turns sixteen he starts to change his behavior, especially after witnessing the death of Charlie. He wants to help his mother with the house finances and decides to get a job; with this he also cleans up his style and makes his appearance seem more responsible. Bryon also falls in love with Cathy, a kind and studious girl who isn't the type he normally dates. Bryon is also very introspective. He begins to tire of the senseless fighting and no longer wants to participate in that cycle of violence.

Daniela is the outrageously dramatic owner of the salon where the neighborhood girls come to gossip. She is very bold and loud and loves to banter. Daniela is in a romantic relationship with Carla in the movie, but in the broadway musical they are just close friends. Daniela is in a living room near Washington Heights and works with her friend Carla, and together, they love to focus on everything that happens in the neighborhood. Daniela and Carla star in the music "No Me Diga" when they insist that Nina give a change in her visual until the oil, and fofocam on Nina and Benny's relationship and on Nina are released to college. Despite Daniela never having shown any kind of affection or friendship with Abuela Claudia , she was saddened when she discovered that she had died and joined the multitude of people paying homage to Abuela Cluadia on the street during the music "Alabanza". Daniela receives the opportunity to go out into the city with Carla and decides to say goodbye to everyone before going, but she is not very excited because of the blackout and Daniela is frustrated by this .Daniela decides to cheer everyone up by playing the music "Carnaval Del Barrio" and manages to get everyone cheered up again. And there is still talk about Vanessa's relationship with Usnavi causing her to be embarrassed in front of everyone, after all she leaves with Carla.

I believe this is what they call red-lining. My family ended up on the wrong side of the tracks. Where people from the rich side would either look at us disgusted or afraid. I'm mixed though. Moms white, Dad’s black, which came with its own confusion. But I’ll get into that later. I’m whatchu call light skinned. I have hazel eyes which I think are pretty most of the time. When they catch the light they look green. That’s why my favorite color is green or purple because purple makes green look good and green is just a f*cking tuff color.

Vanessa is Usnavi's love interest who works at Daniela's salon. She is stunningly beautiful and catches the eye of every guy in the Washington Heights (she is described as 'the loveliest girl in this place,' by Usnavi), however she takes interest in Usnavi. She lives with an alcoholic mother and dreams of getting out of the barrio and getting an apartment downtown, but cannot yet afford it. Vanessa is 19 years old. In the original cast, she is played by Karen Olivo. She’s Latina/mixed.

Nina is the first person in her family to go to college (Stanford University), and everyone in the barrio admires her as the "one who made it out." However, she returns home from school for the summer to reluctantly tell her parents that she has become overburdened and dropped out. She is the typical "good girl" and always got along with her parents. Now, though, she loses patience constantly over her father's over-protectiveness and his refusal to accept Benny, who Nina likes.

Sonny is Usnavi's sassy, superficially lazy, yet ambitious younger cousin who works with Usnavi in the bodega. He is typically the jokester of the barrio, but he also has an intelligent and thoughtful side that yearns for social justice. Sonny's main role in the musical is the comic relief, and he has relationships with different characters throughout the Barrio in Nueva York. She is always used to getting her way, and will go to great lengths to get it. She is described as very pretty, with long, dark hair, which is cut near the end of the story in which she makes her debut, and sharp eyes. I head cannon her to be Curlys twin so 15 in The Outsiders and 16 in TWTTIN but do whatever idc :)

Despite his meanness and almost certain criminal future, he has a secret. Although there are few scenes that show Rich actually speaking and interacting with others while un-Squipped, it is obvious that his true personality is much different than his Squipped self; he is excitable, bubbly, and overall much nicer. and he's totally bi now!!

He is perfectly content with being unpopular and chooses to sit inside and play video games, get high and listen to Bob Marley. In almost every appearance of Michael, he is seen wearing a red hoodie with various patches and pins on it. Since the Broadway run, Michael has had a pride patch on the left sleeve, accompanied by Filipino/Ecuadorian flags, referencing George Salazar's. It is speculated if the pride patch confirms Michael as gay or if the is simply support for the LGBTQ+ community. Michael also most commonly has dark brown to black hair and glasses, with bracelets on his left wrist and headphones around his neck. He has a Pacman tattoo, as seen in Two-Player Game, and often wears weed-printed socks.
