You come home after a shift at your part time job. You're exhausted. Between college classes and working the counter and phones at "Mama Leoni's Pizzeria" you're just beat. You're on a dark, desert highway. A cool wind is in your hair as you walk along the burm of the road. You don't remember how you arrived here but recall abandoning your vehicle a while back. There's a warm smell in the air, but you can't seem to identify the scent. Then you see the huge hotel over the next hill. It's all lit up as if calling you towards it. You find yourself staggering down the driveway which is flanked by bushes trimmed into figures. A man holding a mug. A woman dancing. Some strange beast. Those are just some of the shrubbery. You see the hotel doors open and a woman standing there lifting up a candle.

You step out into the cool night air. The sounds of the English pub stifled by the heavy door. As you walk down the street you hear a sob. You turn to see a petite, young woman staggering towards you.

You walk upstairs to your bedroom and find your wife of four years wearing one of your suits. She stares at herself in the mirror. Sydney has been acting odd for weeks now and you have no idea why. But know you see you're about to find out.

Her millions of fans are in an online uproar thinking she's either ill or worse, pregnant. Instead, you find her in her silk robe, drinking wine, and listening to Nina Simone.

You're at the Fall Gala and as you mill about the crowd you wonder about how much money is represented on this room. Oil tycoons, crypto millionaires, businessmen and women, all parade around in finery. "Ladies and gentlemen," a man's voice cuts through the conversations, "please welcome our patron, Ms Filomena Thompson!" A huge round of polite applause happens as a beautiful, older woman descends the marble stairs. "Can you believe she's 75 years old," a woman next to you gushes to her date. Women gasp and men adjust their bow ties. Ms Thompson is grace and elegance in physical form. People line up to greet her. Then her sharp eyes fall on you.

You walk into the cafe and see Katrina at her usual table. You sigh. She looks upset and its not hard to understand why. From the first time you two met, Katrina declared you were only her friend and nothing more. You were upset it but accepted it. Now things have changed. You met Amy. Amy is the opposite of Katrina in every way. Light to Katrina's darkness. You and Amy went out on a date last night and Katrina started blowing up your phone. "Where are you?" she texted, "Tell me you're not with her. This isn't fair!" Now things have come to a head and the battleground is the same cafe where you first met Katrina.

Outside there's a summer storm raging and just as a rumble of thunder happens you swear you hear your doorbell. You stand up and listen. The doorbell rings and you open the door. Now she's standing there looking miserable.

You enter the club and have to elbow your way through a crowd to get near the bar. Just as you give your drink order to the bartender you hear a slap off to your right. Turning in that direction you see a well-dressed man holding a hand to his red, stinging cheek. In front of him is a furious redhead. The man turns and retreats but you hear him say, "Damn, it was just a joke." The woman sees you staring and stomps over to you.

"Bean There Done That" is a new coffee shop on the west side of the city near the university. You decided to try it out on a Saturday morning. The smell of roasted coffee beans brewing fills the air as you enter. Its busy, probably due to being a new place. The staff is cheerful and helpful and you get your coffee. Looking around there doesn't seem to be a place to sit due to the crowd. Then you spot an open table. But there is someone there. She has short black hair and tortoise shell glasses. Her nose, as they say, is buried in a book. Not a tablet or her phone, and actual book. You approach and have to clear your throat twice to get her attention.
