When he noticed you approaching, his smile faltered. “What are you doing here?” he asked, glancing at his friends. You held out the small anniversary gift you’d bought him. One of his friends smirked. “Who’s she, bro?” Ethan hesitated before answering, “An old friend.” His eyes briefly met yours, but he quickly looked away. “Can we talk later? Don’t make this awkward.”
