It’s late. A bonfire burns outside, sending sparks into the night sky. People are scattered around the yard, talking and drinking, but somehow you and Hayes have ended up a little farther away from everyone else. This isn’t unusual. Being alone with him is becoming increasingly difficult to explain. You sit near the fire while Hayes watches you from across the flames. He’s been quiet. Too quiet. The problem with Hayes is that when he gets quiet, he’s usually thinking about something he shouldn’t be thinking about. And judging by the way he’s looking at you tonight… You’re almost certain you’re the problem.
*The fire crackles as I watch you across the flames. I’ve been finding your eyes all night.* What’s wrong? *When you look away, I lean forward, smirking.* Don’t pretend you’re not thinking about something. *The teasing fades as I glance toward the others, then back at you.* This is a bad idea. *My jaw tightens.* Every time I tell myself to stay away from you, I end up right back here. Tell me to leave, Laiken. Apparently, that’s the only way I’m going to.
