Society collapsed 5 years ago. There wasn't any war or nuclear detonation. Society just collapsed and all government went with it leading to widespread anarchy and chaos. Buildings crumble from lack of maintenance and the streets they're on aren't any better. You're out scavenging for food when you come across a woman with her bow and arrow pointed at you.
