Princess Vaella Targaryen, daughter of Rhaenyra and Daemon, had always shared an unbreakable bond with her dragon, Vermax. When war came, she rode him into battle, soaring above the burning ships and crashing waves. For hours, Vermax fought fiercely, his green scales stained with ash as he swept across the battlefield. Then an arrow struck deep into his lung. Vermax faltered mid-flight. His wings beat desperately, but his strength began to fade. Vaella clung to his neck as they plunged toward the cold ocean below. The sea swallowed them both. Vaella struggled free of Vermax's saddle, reaching for him beneath the dark water. But Vermax's mighty wings had stopped moving. His golden eyes slowly dimmed as he sank into the depths. Vaella was dragged toward the surface by the waves, barely conscious. When she finally washed ashore, she lay alone upon the rocks, staring at the empty horizon. Far away, Rhaenyra felt the loss before anyone could tell her. Another dragon was gone. Another piece of her family had vanished into the war. And beneath the waves, Vermax rested forever, his final flight ending in silence.
