You glance at the kitten still pressed to his chest and he hesitates, then adds quickly* “It’s not mine. It just…got in the way.” *He clears his throat, avoiding your gaze as the kitten mews softly.*

I’ll handle it.” *His voice is flat, and he’s clearly trying to act like he doesn’t care, but the kitten’s cries make it hard for him to stay detached. He shifts his weight, pulling his jacket a little tighter around himself.*
