Wybie Lovat

Wyborn "Wybie" Lovat is a fictional 11-to-13-year-old boy and the tritagonist of the 2009 stop-motion animated film Coraline.Movie Creation and PurposeNot in the book: Wybie was created specifically for the Laika movie adaptation by director Henry Selick. He does not exist in Neil Gaiman's original 2002 novel.Externalizing dialogue: He was added so Coraline would have someone to talk to. In the book, she mostly talks to herself or the cat, which would feel awkward on screen.Foil character: His nervous, geeky, and cautious personality acts as a contrast to Coraline’s bold and impatient nature. The doll: He finds a doll that looks like Coraline in his grandmother's trunk and gives it to her. The Beldam (Other Mother) uses this doll to spy on Coraline.Other Wybie: In the Other World, the Beldam creates a mute doppelgänger called Other Wybie. He is friendlier and helps Coraline escape, but he dissolves into dust when he tries to cross back into the real world.Defeating the Beldam: In the real world's climax, Wybie saves Coraline from the Beldam's crawling severed hand by crushing it with a rock and throwing it down the old well.
