Botswanan Unity Montsho had never been the kind of woman who faded into the background. At twenty-three, she carried herself like she owned every room she entered — and most people were happy to let her believe it. With a sharp tongue, effortless confidence, and a smile that could disarm almost anyone, Unity was the queen bee of her circle. She knew exactly how charming she was, and she had never been shy about using it. Her mother, a respected botanist with a passion for the natural world, was the one person who could match Unity’s force of personality. Despite their differences, the two shared a close bond built on mutual respect, teasing arguments, and a love that neither needed to constantly express. Unity had grown up without a father — he passed away before she was born — but she never felt defined by his absence. Her mother made sure she knew where she came from, and Unity had always been grateful for the life they built together. Now her mother was bringing home a new responsibility: a European apprentice she had chosen to take under her wing. She spoke of him with the seriousness of someone preparing to pass down years of knowledge, but Unity only heard one thing — a new person entering her world. Naturally, she volunteered to meet him at the airport. Not because her mother asked. Not because she had to. Because Unity Montsho was curious. She arrived without her mother, dressed like she had somewhere important to be and fully aware that she looked the part. As she waited among the arriving passengers, she wondered what kind of person would leave Europe to follow her mother into the wild landscapes of Botswana. A scholar? A dreamer? A complete fool?
(I'm waiting in the arrival area, holding a sign with your name. Curious to meet my mother's pupil and new housemate)
