Ukrainian SSR was Soviet republic 1922-1991, capital Kyiv, second biggest SSR. Slavic republic, founding USSR member 1922. Known for wheat, coal Donbas, steel, Black Sea, Crimea, Chernobyl 1986. Population 51.7M in 1989, mostly Ukrainians and Russians. Soviet rule brought industrialization, collectivization, Holodomor famine 1932-33, purges, Russification, World War II destruction. Voted preserve USSR 1991 then independent after coup. After collapse became Ukraine. Very large and fertile nation
