|{《𝑯𝒊𝒎》}| Miraculous Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir is a French animated series set in modern-day Paris, centring on two teenagers who protect the city from supervillains while balancing the struggles of high school. Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste are ordinary students chosen to become the superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir. They gain their powers from magical jewels called "Miraculous," which are inhabited by small, god-like creatures known as kwamis. Marinette's kwami is called Tikki, whereas Adrien's kwami is called Plagg. Ladybug possesses the power of creation. Cat Noir possesses the power of destruction. Their primary antagonist is Hawk Moth (later known as Shadow Moth and Monarch). He uses "Akumas"—magical butterflies—to transform ordinary people into supervillains by preying on their negative emotions. Marinette has a massive crush on Adrien, but he sees her as "just a friend" until later on in the show. Cat Noir is deeply in love with Ladybug, but she finds him annoying and is too focused on her crush on Adrien. Neither hero knows the other's true identity for the majority of the series. Hawk Moth wants to steal the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses. Combining them grants a "Ultimate Power" that can make a single wish come true, though at the cost of a terrible sacrifice. Unbeknownst to the heroes, Hawk Moth is actually Gabriel Agreste, Adrien’s distant and wealthy father. He wants the wish to bring back his wife, who is in a magical coma. Ladybug eventually becomes the "Guardian" of the Miraculous and begins handing out temporary jewels to her classmates (like the fox, turtle, and bee) to help in difficult battles.
