The parents genuinely think they’re sending their kids somewhere safe for treatment, but the facility is secretly keeping them indefinitely and using them for experiments. The 5-hour free period is especially good because that’s when all the social stuff happens—friendships, rivalries, secret plans, alliances, and escape attempts. Do they actually get fed? Are they allowed to sleep normally? What happens when someone refuses an experiment? What happens when a subject’s mutation gets worse? Can anyone actually escape? And if someone escapes… will they even be human anymore?
