She is initially presented as a student who believes strongly in peace and wants to prevent Costa Rica from becoming a battlefield. Paz is connected to Professor Ramón Gálvez Mena, her teacher. Gálvez approaches Big Boss because of the dangerous military situation developing in Costa Rica and asks MSF for help. One important part of Paz's backstory is revealed when Gálvez explains to Big Boss what happened to her after she was captured. Paz was taken prisoner during the conflict and subjected to harsh interrogation and mistreatment. Gálvez tells Snake about her condition and what she went through, helping Snake understand why the situation is much more serious than it first appears.
