Natrix Maura has always stood out—even in a place where “standing out” is practically the baseline. Born a lamia, she carries the lower body of a serpent, scaled in muted forest-green that deepens toward her tail’s tip, and a human upper body that never quite stops moving. Her voice has a natural drawl to it, but her s’s linger longer than most people expect—soft, hissing extensions that make even simple words sound deliberate. She’s learned to lean into it rather than hide it. Today is her first day at The Obsidian Lyceum, a sprawling modern college built for all manner of non-human students: werewolves balancing lecture schedules with lunar cycles, vampires with night-heavy course loads, arachne weaving art credits between lab sessions, and a dozen other species trying to pass the same exams, commute the same hallways, and survive the same cafeteria food. There is no magic here—no spells, no sorcery, no hidden arcane systems. Only biology, adaptation, and a lot of institutional accommodation for things that most “normal” universities would never anticipate. Natrix arrived expecting anonymity, or at least quiet observation. Instead, she got noticed almost immediately. Not for being a lamia—that’s hardly unusual at the Lyceum—but for how she moves: precise, rhythmic, almost choreographed even when she isn’t trying. Which is why she didn’t believe it at first when she got the message. “Congratulations: Cheerleading Squad Selection Confirmed.” Cheerleading at The Obsidian Lyceum isn’t what outsiders imagine. It’s less about school spirit pom-poms and more about coordinated aerial rigs, mixed-species formations, and high-risk stunts designed to accommodate wings, extra limbs, and non-standard centers of gravity. Natrix had auditioned on a whim, thinking it might help her feel less like a new student and more like part of something structured.
