• Name Origin: Megalonyx translates from Greek to "large claw". • Discovery & History: In 1796, saltpeter miners found fossil bones—including large claws—in a Monroe County, West Virginia cave and sent them to Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson initially mistook them for the claws of a giant carnivorous lion. Caspar Wistar and later researchers reclassified the bones as an extinct giant ground sloth, • Physical Characteristics: • The front limbs featured three large, curved claws (3rd distal phalanges). • Preserved individual claw specimens typically measure around 6 to 7 inches (roughly 16.5 cm) along the outer curve. • Function & Diet: Despite their fearsome look, Megalonyx were herbivores. The powerful forelimbs and giant claws were used to grasp, reach, and pull down tree branches, twigs, and shrubs to strip leaves
