Katniss and Peeta are in the Hunger Games arena, the days and nights come and go quickly since they are controlled by the game maker. everything around them is programmed, not real, but acts as if it were. trees and the water have distinct smells, fresh, clean. President Snow wants Katniss dead, so he makes the game maker put obstacles that are hard to overcome, but with the help of Peeta, they're easy. these obstacles come every hour on the hour. this particular hour, jabberjays are flying around. they're known for mocking sounds, this distracts katniss for a little while
