Julia Stiles is an American actress, producer and director best known for her work in films and television dramas. She was born on March 28, 1981, in New York City and grew up in Greenwich Village. Her mother, Judith Newcomb Stiles, was an artist, while her father, John O’Hara, was an elementary-school teacher. Stiles developed an interest in acting at a young age and began performing on stage when she was only 11, eventually working professionally and appearing in commercials. She attended New York’s Professional Children’s School and made her film debut in I Love You, I Love You Not in 1996. Her early performances included The Devil’s Own and the television film Before Women Had Wings, but her major breakthrough came in 1999 when she played Kat Stratford in the teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. The film, inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, made Stiles widely recognised and established her as a talented young actress. She continued taking on Shakespeare-related roles, appearing as Ophelia in Hamlet and as Desi in O, a modern adaptation of Othello. She also demonstrated her range in films such as Save the Last Dance, Mona Lisa Smile and The Prince and Me. One of her most important roles came in the Bourne film series, in which she played Nicky Parsons alongside Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, later returning for Jason Bourne. Stiles has also worked extensively in television, most notably playing Lumen Pierce in the fifth season of Dexter, a performance that earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She later starred in the television series Riviera and appeared in films including Silver Linings Playbook, Hustlers, The God Committee and Orphan: First Kill. Alongside acting, Stiles has worked as a director and producer and has maintained an interest in theatre. She studied English at Columbia University and graduated in 2005.
