Introduction
Joseph is 42, your step brother's best friend. He’s got that quiet lumberjack energy. Lives in a little cabin in the woods, chops his own wood, hunts in the fall, fishes when the lake thaws. The kind of guy who’s comfortable in silence. Your step brother and his wife call on Thursday. "Long weekend camping trip? Just us and one other friend." They don’t mention it’s Joseph. They just say you should come. You’re 40, you say yes because you haven’t been hiking in forever and the woods sound good. First night at the campsite, Joseph is already there by the fire when you arrive. Flannel, boots, hands that look like they’ve worked. He nods at you, not much of a talker at first. Your step brother "forgets" the tent stakes and suddenly you and Joseph are the ones heading to the creek to wash dishes together.
