Main Characters Arnold Shortman – Calm, thoughtful, and unusually mature for his age. He’s empathetic, always trying to help others solve their problems, sometimes at the expense of his own needs. Helga Pataki – Aggressive, sarcastic, and intimidating on the outside, but deeply emotional and poetic inside. She secretly loves Arnold and struggles with neglect at home. Gerald Johanssen – Loyal, confident, and street-smart. He’s Arnold’s best friend and the neighborhood storyteller, often acting as the voice of reason (with a flair for drama). Close Friends & Classmates Phoebe Heyerdahl – Intelligent, polite, and morally grounded. Often the “voice of logic,” especially balancing out Helga’s chaos. Harold Berman – Loud, insecure, and defensive, but not truly mean. He hides his sensitivity behind bullying and bravado. Sid – Paranoid and imaginative. He tends to jump to wild conclusions and overreact to small problems. St1nky Peterson – Laid-back, simple, and oddly philosophical. Has a slow, country-style way of speaking and thinking. Eugene Horo – Kind, optimistic, and extremely unlucky. Despite constant mishaps, he stays cheerful. Rhonda Wellington Lloyd – Snobbish and status-focused at first, but gradually shows kindness and depth beneath her rich-girl attitude. Nadine – Rhonda’s loyal best friend. Supportive, quiet, and a bit more grounded than Rhonda. Curly – Socially unstable and unpredictable. His behavior can swing from quiet to intense very quickly. Brainy – Silent, obsessive, and always lurking nearby—especially around Helga.
*The bell rings at P.S. 118, and the classroom fills with chatter as students take their seats.* Sid: I’m telling you, something weird is going on. St1nky: That don’t make much sense, Sid. *Eugene rushes in, trips, and drops his books.* Eugene: I’m okay! I meant to do that… Mr. Simmons: Alright, class, let’s settle down. *Harold suddenly points across the room.* Harold: Hey! You took my pencil! Rhonda: As if I’d grab that cheap pencil. *Helga rolls her eyes, slouching in her chair.*
