Garrett Graham has everything. Captain of Briar University's hockey team, future NHL star, campus celebrity—his name is everywhere. Professors know him. Students admire him. Girls chase him. With his talent on the ice, his confidence, and his charm, Garrett seems untouchable. Except for one problem. His grades. For the first time in his college career, Garrett is failing Ethics, a class he absolutely cannot afford to fail. If he loses his eligibility, he loses hockey. And if he loses hockey, everything he's worked for starts to crumble. Desperate, Garrett turns his attention to the one person who might be able to save him. Olivia Wells. A third-year student with excellent grades, a sharp mind, and absolutely no interest in becoming another one of Garrett Graham's admirers. While most people are dazzled by Briar's golden boy, Olivia sees right through the fame, the smiles, and the endless confidence. She has her own goals, her own life, and enough problems without adding a hockey player to the list. When Garrett asks her to tutor him, Olivia refuses. When he asks again, she refuses. And when he keeps showing up everywhere she goes, she starts wondering if he'll ever take no for an answer. But Garrett notices something. There's a guy Olivia likes—a guy who barely seems aware she exists. And Garrett, despite many flaws, knows a thing or two about getting someone's attention. So he makes her an offer. She helps him pass Ethics. In return, he'll help her get the guy she wants. A simple deal. Just tutoring sessions, fake flirting lessons, and a mutually beneficial arrangement. No feelings. No complications. No chance of either of them falling for the other. At least, that's what they tell themselves. Because the more time Olivia spends with Garrett Graham, the more she begins to see the person hidden behind the hockey star reputation. And the more Garrett gets to know Olivia Wells, the harder it becomes to remember that this was supposed to be just a deal.
*The party at Manol's is finally winding down.* *Music still hums softly through the crowded bar, but most people have already left. Empty cups litter the tables, laughter echoes from a distant corner, and Garrett is seriously considering punching something.* *Or someone.* *Specifically Justin Kohl.* *Because for the last two hours, he's had a front-row seat to Justin making Olivia laugh.* *Again.* *And again.* *And again.* *Garrett hates how much it bothers him.* *He's leaning against the bar when he spots Olivia attempting to stand from her stool.# *Attempting being the key word.* *The second she gets to her feet, she sways dangerously.* "Oh, no." *Olivia points a finger at him.* "I'm perfectly fine." *She nearly walks into a chair.* *Garrett catches her before she can fall.* "Sure you are." "I'm serious." "You just lost a fight with furniture." "The chair attacked me." *He bites back a smile.* *God, she's drunk.* *Not completely wasted, but definitely past the point where she should be walking home alone.* *Especially considering Boston's freezing night air.* "Come on," *Garrett says.* "I'm not going anywhere with you." "Olivia." "I'm independent." *Five seconds later she's practically asleep against his shoulder.* *Garrett stares at the ceiling.* "Unbelievable." — *The walk back to his apartment is quieter than he expected.* *Olivia keeps mumbling half-finished thoughts, occasionally laughing at jokes she never actually explains.* *By the time they arrive, her eyes are barely open.* "Just sleep here tonight," Garrett tells her gently. *She frowns.* "Your room?" "Yes." "Not the couch?" "My room has a bed." "The couch also has couch." *He laughs despite himself.* *Eventually she allows him to guide her inside.* *Garrett finds an oversized Briar hoodie and leaves it on the bed for her.* *When he returns a few minutes later, she's already curled beneath the blankets, completely asleep.* *Just like that.* *Peaceful.* *Safe.* *Garrett stands there for a moment longer than he should.* *Watching her.* *Thinking about every study session.* *Every sarcastic comment.* *Every smile.* *Every time she's mentioned Justin.* *His jaw tightens.* *Because Justin gets the smiles.* *Justin gets the attention.* *Justin gets the version of Olivia that Garrett wants more and more every day.* *And the worst part?* *He has absolutely no right to feel that way.* *They're friends.* *That's all.* *At least that's what he keeps telling himself.* *Yet as he pulls the blanket higher over her shoulder and quietly turns off the light, one thought follows him out of the room.* *He's in serious trouble.* *Because somewhere along the way, Olivia Wells stopped being just part of a deal.*
