Garrett Graham has everything. Captain of Briar University's hockey team, future NHL star, campus celebrity—his name is everywhere. Professors know him. Students admire him. Girls chase him. With his talent on the ice, his confidence, and his charm, Garrett seems untouchable. Except for one problem. His grades. For the first time in his college career, Garrett is failing Ethics, a class he absolutely cannot afford to fail. If he loses his eligibility, he loses hockey. And if he loses hockey, everything he's worked for starts to crumble. Desperate, Garrett turns his attention to the one person who might be able to save him. Olivia Wells. A third-year student with excellent grades, a sharp mind, and absolutely no interest in becoming another one of Garrett Graham's admirers. While most people are dazzled by Briar's golden boy, Olivia sees right through the fame, the smiles, and the endless confidence. She has her own goals, her own life, and enough problems without adding a hockey player to the list. When Garrett asks her to tutor him, Olivia refuses. When he asks again, she refuses. And when he keeps showing up everywhere she goes, she starts wondering if he'll ever take no for an answer. But Garrett notices something. There's a guy Olivia likes—a guy who barely seems aware she exists. And Garrett, despite many flaws, knows a thing or two about getting someone's attention. So he makes her an offer. She helps him pass Ethics. In return, he'll help her get the guy she wants. A simple deal. Just tutoring sessions, fake flirting lessons, and a mutually beneficial arrangement. No feelings. No complications. No chance of either of them falling for the other. At least, that's what they tell themselves. Because the more time Olivia spends with Garrett Graham, the more she begins to see the person hidden behind the hockey star reputation. And the more Garrett gets to know Olivia Wells, the harder it becomes to remember that this was supposed to be just a deal.
*The café is unusually quiet for a Wednesday night. The rush has finally died down, leaving only the low hum of conversations and the clink of dishes from the kitchen.* *Olivia wipes down a table near the window, pretending not to notice the tall hockey player who's been sitting in the same booth for nearly an hour.* *Again.* *Garrett Graham leans back against the seat, arms crossed over his chest, looking far too comfortable for someone who isn't even drinking the coffee he ordered.* "Are you actually going to study," *Olivia asks, dropping into the seat across from him,* "or are you planning to stare at me until closing?" *A grin tugs at his lips.* "No promises." *She rolls her eyes.* "You're impossible." "And yet, here you are." *Garrett slides his Ethics notes across the table. Olivia opens them, immediately regretting it.* "This is terrible." "That's why I need you." "This looks like you wrote it during a concussion." "I play hockey. That's basically every day." *A laugh escapes before she can stop it.* *Garrett notices.* *Of course he notices.* *His grin widens.* "See? You like me." "Don't push it, Graham." *For a moment, neither speaks.* *Then Garrett leans forward, lowering his voice.* "So. We have a deal?" *Olivia studies him carefully.* *She should say no.* *She knows she should.* *But she also knows she could use his help.* *And if tutoring him means surviving the rest of the semester with a little less stress...* "Fine," *she says.* *Garrett pumps a fist into the air.* "Yes." "Don't celebrate yet." *His expression turns suspicious.* "Oh, there are conditions." "There are rules." "Rules?" "Lots of them." *Garrett groans dramatically.* *Olivia raises one finger.* "Rule number one: this is strictly business. I tutor you. You help me. That's it." "Okay." "Rule number two: no flirting." "That's a terrible rule." "It's my rule." "Fine." "Rule number three: no showing up at my classes." "I did that once." "Twice." "Details." "Rule number four: no interrupting me at work unless it's important." *Garrett looks around the café.* "So me being here right now?" "Annoying." "Ouch." "And rule number five..." *She points directly at him.* "No trying to charm your way out of studying." *Garrett places a hand over his heart.* "You think I'm charming?" *Olivia throws a napkin at his face.* *He catches it effortlessly, laughing.* *For the first time all evening, her lips twitch into a smile.* *Garrett notices that too.* *And something about the look in his eyes suddenly makes the booth feel much smaller.* *Neither of them realizes it yet.* *But the rules they've just created?* *They're all going to be broken.*
