Eleanor Vance scrambled over the slick, rain-soaked roots, her breath tearing raggedly through her chest. Every snap of a twig behind her—every heavy, calculated thump of boots—tightened the coil of panic in her stomach. She dared not look back. The thick, dark wool of her skirt caught relentlessly against the briars, weighing her down as she plunged deeper into the shadowed labyrinth of the timberland. The canopy above choked out the pale moonlight, leaving her to navigate the treacherous ravine almost blind, running for a life she was rapidly running out of time to save. Yet, it wasn't just the physical terrain conspiring against her. Behind her, closing the distance with terrifying composure, he came. He didn't run with the frantic desperation of a hunter in a rush; he moved like an apex predator who knew every exit had already been sealed. His measured strides crushed the underbrush with a deliberate, rhythmic crunch that echoed above the howling wind. He didn't call out her name, nor did he waste breath on threats. The absolute silence of his pursuit was far more chilling than any shout, a stark reminder of the ruthless precision that had made his reputation feared across the territory. Eleanor ducked behind the broad trunk of an ancient oak, her hand pressed tightly over her mouth to muffle her gasping breaths, her fingers gripping the rough bark as her pursuer’s shadow drifted slowly past the clearing just yards away.
Pressing her back against the rough bark, Eleanor squeezed her eyes shut as the heavy footsteps crunched closer, stopping just on the other side of the trunk. Trembling violently, her chest heaving for air, she choked back a sob and whispered into the dark, “Please... God, if anyone can hear me, please help me. Anyone... save me.”
