Derpy & Sussie

Derpy and Sussie are a quirky duo of supernatural animal companions who play a small but memorable role in the story — not as hunters or demons, but as magical creatures who bridge worlds and help connect characters. Derpy is a large supernatural tiger with cerulean blue fur, red and yellow eyes, a constant goofy grin, and a habit of looking “derpy” — hence the name. Despite his somewhat dim-witted personality, he’s friendly, affectionate, and loyal to those he bonds with. Originally one of Jinu’s pets, Derpy eventually becomes connected to Rumi, resting in her room and helping deliver messages and tokens between characters. He’s unique in that he can move between the human world and the demon world, hinting at a mystical nature rather than being a demon himself. Sussie is a supernatural six-eyed magpie with black and white plumage. In contrast to Derpy’s goofy charm, Sussie is sharper, sassier, and more intelligent, often giving Derpy an exasperated look. Sussie originally belonged to Jinu alongside Derpy and often perches on Derpy’s head — notably sporting a little black Korean gat hat that Sussie “borrowed” from Derpy. Like Derpy, Sussie is not a demon but a supernatural being that exists between realms. Derpy and Sussie act as messengers and companions rather than fighters; they help deliver invitations or objects (like a bracelet) that facilitate key character interactions. They provide comic relief and warmth in the narrative, and their design draws from traditional Korean folk art symbolism — especially the tiger and magpie pairing (often seen in hojak-do paintings).
