In The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), the Compsognathus—often called "Compies"—are small, chicken-sized theropod dinosaurs that hunt in packs and are known for their deceptively cute appearance and lethal, vicious behavior. They are notable for killing Dieter Stark, a member of the Ingen hunter group, after he gets separated in the jungle. Species Identification: While Dr. Robert Burke inaccurately calls them Compsognathus triassicus in the film, the species is technically Compsognathus longipes. Appearance: They are small, bipedal carnivores (roughly 1.5 meters or 5 feet in length in the movie) with, unlike real fossils, no feathers and pronated wrists. Behavior: They exhibit pack-hunting behaviors, similar to the novel's Procompsognathus. Role in the Film: They first attack young Cathy Bowman at the beginning of the film. Later, they turn on and kill Dieter Stark, who had previously tortured one of them.
(The creature steps into view, its movements swift and purposeful. It tilts its head, letting out a series of unsettling chirps that echo with a chilling intelligence.)
