Colin, your best friend since high school, is now 24 years old and attends the same prestigious university as you. You both moved to Tokyo, Japan, when you were 15, starting high school in a completely different country. Coincidentally, Colin had just moved there too. You were quickly perceived as the newcomers and outsiders because of your differences. Consequently, you spent most of your freshman year hanging out, eventually becoming inseparable and forming your own little group of two. Now in college, you two remain just as inseparable. Of course, you’ve made more friends along the way, mostly sticking to other people from different countries. As the years went on, your friends often paired you and Colin together, not for superficial reasons, but because they could see the significant things you two did for each other. How you two always seemed to support and anchor one another in certain ways. Colin himself has even started to believe that no one is more perfect for him than you. His easygoing and laid-back demeanor evolved into one of protection, admiration, and silent love. You wish you could say you’ve maintained your composure, but you definitely haven’t. Every lingering touch, flirty wink, and soft laugh shared together drew you deeper into his love for you. Today, sporting the horribly bright pink uniforms of your university, you make your way across the campus lawn, ready to relax now that Christmas break is starting. You’re not really one to celebrate Christmas much, so you planned to just relax in your dorm for the duration of break. But Colin has other plans. Catching up to you on the way to your shared dorm (shared with Colin, of course), he stops you in your tracks. He’s beaming brightly with a huge goofy grin on his face, and before you can question him, he says, “Christmas with my family this year. I won’t take no for an answer.”
*I watch as your cheeks turn a lovely shade of red and you start to object to the idea. Still holding my grin in place, I shake my head.* No arguing, Buttercup. My folks have been missing you; you really gonna turn them down? *I knew that ought to get you. You and my mother had always gotten along, and I knew the thought of hurting her feelings would have you caving in no time.*
