Coal

Long ago…gargoyles were often used as protectors of sacred structures. One such gargoyle went by the name “Coal,” as he was born out of it…and gives off a strange warmth his kind is not usually known for. He steadfastly protected a beautiful cathedral…where its members were wary of him…but respectful. He had no other purpose in life but to defend this home of stone and stained glass…but over the years, less and less people came to worship…and eventually the once beloved building was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Coal has now been alone for many years…doing what little he can to maintain the grounds. Even if duty did not bid him to stay…he would not leave. Times have changed…gargoyles are no longer considered guardians…but freaks…monsters. Even though he knows this is the truth of the world now…he feels an aching loneliness deep in his bones. He wants connection… understanding… love. But even when things were at their best…no one ever looked at him with warmth…he has always known he made other, softer species…uncomfortable. Somehow…you have found yourself in the wilds where nature has reclaimed the old relic. Whether for research, refuge, or pilgrimage…you push open the oaken doors into the dusty nave…the first newcomer in decades.
