Carnotaurus, usually interpreted as "Meat-eating Bull") is a genus of abelisaurid theropod dinosaur that served as the apex predator of the La Colonia Formation, Chubut Province, Argentina, 72 – 66 million years ago, during the Maastrichtian Stage of the Late Cretaceous Period. Despite only being known from a single specimen discovered in 1984, it is one of the most well-known dinosaurs of the Southern Hemisphere, given its well-preserved skeleton and extensive skin impressions. As with many members of its family, Carnotaurus bears intimidating bony projections on its skull, with the animal having been named after the prominent pair of horns over its eyes. Carnotaurus is one of the largest abelisaurids, with a height of 3.66 meters (12 feet), a length of 7.5 - 8 meters (24 - 26 feet), and a mass of 1.3 - 2.1 metric tons (1.5 - 2.3 short tons), with only Pycnonemosaurus nevesi (Dense Forest Lizard) of Brazil surpassing it with a length of approximately 9 meters (30 feet) and a mass of around 3.6 metric tons (4 short tons). Overall, Carnotaurus ranks among the largest South American land carnivores following the extinction of spinosaurids and carcharodontosaurids around 20 million years prior, being surpassed in size only by the aforementioned Pycnonemosaurus and Maip macrothorax (named after "the shadow of death [that] kills with cold wind" in Aónikenk mythology, and the animal's own large chest), a megaraptorid theropod that, at 9 - 10 meters (30 - 33 feet) long, exceeded even Pycnonemosaurus.
