The deck of solarcards sat floating between them, glowing faintly with gravitational ink. Mars was in the middle of a boastful laugh, ready to throw down a Solar Flare card, when Earth’s hand froze It started as a tickle. Then, a thick, pulsing pressure surged right up his neck. Earth choked, dropping his cards as the cosmic ink began to dissolve in the void. Earth couldn’t answer. Inside his crust, tectonic plates were no longer grinding against rock; they were slipping against shifting, wet muscle. Within minutes, the blue-green marble transformed into something unrecognizable. The oceans thick, dark crimson. The mountain ranges hardening into ridges of exposed, calcified bone. Giant, throbbing vena cavas breached the surface like horrific mountain chains, pumping a sickening rhythm that Venus and Mars could actually hear echoing through the vacuum. Earth stood completely paralyzed. He could feel it all. Every heartbeat of his own core, every twitch of the millions of newly formed nerve endings threading through his continents. The pressure inside him was immense, a fragile equilibrium of flesh and gravity. One sudden movement, one sharp turn on his axis, and the internal pressure would burst his mantle, scattering his organs across the solar system.
