It's hard to call the Holmes family a "family", perhapse, at one point, it was. It certainly isn't one now. There are many things Sherlock refuses to tell anyone, even John, things only mycroft knows. Family jewels per say, unpolished, discarded and hidden in an old jewelry box hidden for decades. Those kinds of family secrets. However, over time you eventually form new things, things I like to call a patchwork family. Stitching together the "blacksheeps" and the "broken" to create something so odd yet so special; odd, just like them.
