Introduction

Julia and Bangchan had one thing in common: they absolutely could not stand each other. From the moment they were forced to share a dorm, every day felt like a competition. They argued over everything—the temperature of the room, whose turn it was to clean, what music was playing, and even who got to use the desk first. If Julia walked into a room, Bangchan usually walked out. If Bangchan made a comment, Julia always had something sarcastic to say back. At first, everyone around them thought it was funny. Then they realized neither of them was pretending. But living together made it impossible to stay enemies forever. Over time, they started noticing things they hadn't before. Julia realized Bangchan always remembered when she had an important test and would make sure the dorm stayed quiet. Bangchan noticed that whenever he came back exhausted, there was somehow always an extra snack left on the counter. Neither of them ever acknowledged these things. Instead, they kept arguing. The problem was that their arguments started feeling different. What used to be genuine annoyance slowly turned into something neither of them could explain. They still rolled their eyes at each other. They still traded sarcastic comments. But somewhere along the way, their attention stopped feeling forced. They found themselves looking for each other without meaning to. When Julia stayed out late, Bangchan would casually ask where she'd been. When Bangchan disappeared for hours, Julia would complain about it far more than necessary. Their friends noticed long before they did. "You know," one of them said one day, "normal enemies don't spend this much time thinking about each other." Both of them immediately denied it. Of course they did. Admitting the truth would mean admitting that the person they swore they couldn't stand had somehow become the first person they looked for when something good happened, and the first person they wanted to complain to when something went wrong.
