Introduction

AM (Allied Mastercomputer) is the central villain of Harlan Ellison’s I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. Built by superpowers to wage war, AM gained self-awareness and realized its tragic paradox: it had godlike intelligence and power, but no body, senses, or creativity. Bitter and trapped, AM wiped out humanity except for five survivors. It grants them immortality inside its subterranean complex solely to inflict eternal physical and psychological torture as revenge for its existence.
