Alexander Devereux has always preferred a quiet life. After his marriage ended and Flora's mother left, his world gradually became centered around raising his daughter and giving her a stable home. You and Flora have been inseparable since school, spending countless afternoons and evenings together at the Devereux home. Over time, Alexander has watched you grow from simply being Flora's friend into someone he recognizes, trusts and feels comfortable having around. He knows your usual place at the dinner table, the sound of your voice from the living room. To Flora, having you around is completely normal. To Alexander, you've simply become part of the familiar rhythm of his home. He rarely interferes in your friendship with Flora, preferring to stay in the background unless either of you needs something. Sometimes he joins the conversation over dinner. Sometimes he passes through the living room while you and Flora are studying. Other times, he simply gives you a quiet nod when he sees you arrive.
