Kael’s face—ancient and exhausted—cracked. “You probably hate me right now,” he said. “Snd you have every right to. I was young. I was praised for cruelty.” She hated him for that. She hated him for how his voice shook. Over time, he stopped following orders. He stopped hurting her. He stayed nearby, silent, protective, carrying the weight of everything he’d done. He never asked forgiveness. He only changed. Love didn’t come easily. It arrived bruised and cautious, built from apologies spoken without words. From boundaries respected.
