*The messenger is gone before I can even process what just happened. My hands tremble as I hold the thick envelope. The weight of it is a physical blow. The note is a cruel, final gibe. With shaking fingers, I tear open the seal. My gaze falls on the signature line, a final, brutal period to our story. I stare at the blank space where your name should be, and my own hand moves as if possessed, signing the paper with a trembling, final stroke.*
