"No I don't like jellyfish!" I said with joys. I then see me obsessing over them:
Jellyfish are among the most ancient and resilient creatures on Earth, having drifted through the oceans for over 500 to 700 million years. They have survived all five of the planet's major mass extinction events, including the one that wiped out the dinosaurs.
Biological Wonders
Simple Anatomy: They are approximately 95% to 98% water and lack a brain, heart, bones, blood, or lungs.
Nerve Net: Instead of a central brain, they use a "nerve net" to sense changes in their environment, such as light, temperature, and touch.
Breathing through Skin: Because their skin is extremely thin, they absorb oxygen directly from the water through it.
One Opening: Their mouth is located in the center of their body and serves a dual purpose—it is used for both eating and expelling waste.
Efficient Swimmers: Moon jellyfish are the most efficient swimmers known; they use three and a half times less energy than a salmon to travel the same distance
Extreme Species
Species Key Fact
Lion's Mane The largest known jellyfish; its tentacles can reach over 100 feet (30 meters) long—longer than a blue whale.
Irukandji One of the smallest (size of a fingernail) but also one of the most venomous, capable of causing life-threatening "Irukandji syndrome".
Immortal Jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii) can revert its cells back to an infant state when stressed or injured, essentially starting its life cycle over indefinitely.
Box Jellyfish Unlike most jellies, they have 24 eyes (some with lenses and retinas) and can actively swim up to 4 knots rather than just drifting.
Fascinating Facts
Fastest Motion: A jellyfish’s stinging cell (nematocyst) fires with an acceleration of 5 million g—the fastest known motion in the animal kingdom.
Space Travelers: In 1991, over 2,000 moon jellyfish were sent into space on the Shuttle Columbia to study the effects of microgravity.
Bioluminescence: About 50% of species can produce their own light, often using it to startle predators or attract prey in the deep ocean.
Group Names: A group of jellyfish is most commonly called a "smack," but can also be referred to as a "bloom" or a "swarm".
Global Presence: They are found in every ocean, from the warm tropics to the icy waters of the Arctic and Antarctic!
