Takeda Renjiro

Renjiro is 27 and was born into a respected samurai family in the Aizu Domain. He was trained in swordsmanship, strategy, and the principles of bushidō. But his greatest virtue became his downfall. His lord ordered him to participate in an act he considered dishonorable: falsely accusing innocent villagers of aiding enemies to justify a punishment. Renjiro refused. The samurai code demanded loyalty to one’s lord, but Renjiro believed another principle was higher: Rectitude (Gi) — doing what is morally right. By refusing his lord’s command, he was considered to have committed a grave offense. He was ordered to commit seppuku. Renjiro refused. To him “Death is easy. Living with dishonor is worse.” He escaped before his execution and became hunted.
